Finally! My First Job

December 27, 2015 in LOOKBOOK, Residency Talk

I’ve fallen a bit behind on blogging. I’d been putting my energy elsewhere… towards finding a job! These past few months have been filled with researching hospitals, filling out applications and heading off to interviews (which sometimes felt like interrogation sessions…). Nothing about that was difficult per se, but it was certainly stressful. Especially during the long waiting period before anyone was offering positions. But it was worth the effort, I think. The group I signed with was so friendly and supportive, I really felt at home there. I’m excited to finish residency and start working! Only about six more months to go…

Having a job figured out is such a relief and opens a lot of free time back up so I can start doing other things again! One thing I’m most looking forward to is reading a good book. Seriously, what’s better than sitting by the fire with a cozy blanket, chai tea and a good fiction novel? Maybe reading on the beach with a cocktail, but since that’s not possible, I’ll settle for the former. I also need to get back into cooking! I’m not sure how successful I’ll be in that since I still am working a lot and I eat most meals in the hospital. But I’ll try. I also need a good closet update. Its been quite the struggle to dress up recently, which isn’t uncommon for me in winter anyway. I excelled (hehe 🙂 ) at amping up my shoe collection after I discovered the Sloan flat (I have them in 4 colors and am still angry I missed out on the special edition ones). The addition of those shoes made getting dressed super easy – just throw on some dark ankle pants and a sweater and you’re good to go! Unfortunately, its gotten pretty cold and am sick of my feet freezing. My 5050 boots from a few years ago are getting a lot of love now. I’m a bit obsessed with the gorgeous Highland and Lowland OTK boots, but will have to either sell a bunch of stuff or pick up a few extra shifts to pay for them. But those are boots I’ll wear and love for years, so its almost justifiable.

Oh, there’s so much more on my wishlist (or sitting in my cyber carts) just waiting for sale… and for my bank account to bulk up! If I pull the trigger on another coat it’ll likely be J. Crew’s Chateau Parka. I have last year’s version and love it. Its probably J. Crew’s best coat, so I doubt it’ll actually make it to sale, but we’ll see. There are a few Burberry coats on sale (and they’re having their winter sale), but I don’t think I want to spend that much. I’ve also been waiting for forever for Madewell’s Shirttail skirt to get marked down. I’m hoping it’ll be as versatile as the last skirt I got from them (I’m usually not a skirt person, but those are so flattering). I’m overdo for adding some extra over-sized shirts to my closet too, but my wish-listed stripe and plaid ones refuse to make it to sale.

There are so many good sales that I have yet to browse. Like Ann Taylor’s 60% off everything (as good as it gets!), or Yoox’s extra 25% off everything (not many people use Yoox, but I like it). Maybe I’ll get there. Or maybe I’ll just start browsing and give up after a few minutes as usual. Anyway, I hope you had some good time off, have a wonderful week!

Top 5 Tips for Staying on Track

November 18, 2015 in Life Tips, LOOKBOOK

I’m always looking for ways to improve myself. Why not, right? Its better than the alternative? 🙂 When I come across a good idea, I’ll give it a try. Sometimes it sticks and sometimes not. Below are some of my favorites!

#1 Keep it interesting. When I’m working a ton of hours it can be difficult to motivate myself to learn about non-medicine things. But I find that if I don’t do that, I get stuck in a rut of uninspired boredom (not that medicine is boring, but doing any one thing over and over can become boring!). The easiest fix I’ve found is Audible audio books. I’ve been listening to these books online for the past few months. Its $15 a month and you get to choose from a ton of books (I think you still get your first two books free). I just finished ~17 hours of Buddhism teaching (the great courses). It was awesome and intriguing! I’m going to make it through maybe one or two more books on Buddhism before I’ll make myself take a break and learn about something else (I heard the great courses on weapons is awesome).

#2 Streamline the online. I can’t believe how much time I can waste on the interwebs. Life is so much nicer after cutting back a bit (sounds like addict talk). To keep myself from sifting through 20-30 emails each day, I subscribe to unroll.me to consolidate all of my retail emails into one daily email. The application also allows you to unsubscribe or keep email from certain sources in your inbox if you prefer as well. I also got rid of facebook, twitter, instagram, etc on my phone. Really, I don’t need all that junk. It would probably be good for my blog to be more involved, but its not worth sacrificing that much of my life to it.

Vince sweater, Burberry Scarf (pre-owned, these are super cheap on eBay in the summer), Madewell skirt (adorable IRL, also comes in a leather version, I’m wearing a 00), J. Crew shoes (love love love these… pretty much sold out, available in the metallic version still, and the sloan d’orsay flats are pretty similar and almost just as awesome 😉 ), Fendi bag
#3 Workout with an intention. I’m a firm believer in the daily workout – so many benefits!! There’s no better way to start off the day than with a good workout, although unfortunately I usually start work too early to make the 6am classes. But evening workouts are good, too. One small thing I’ve added to my workouts is a little mantra. It’ll change by the day, but it usually is something like “relax, happy, healthy, breathe.” Its uplifting and I think its good to remind yourself that you are proud of yourself (as funny as that sounds).

#4 Just track it. For me, eating like crap is a sure way to make myself feel gross physically and mentally. But eating healthy is hard! The easiest (but still hard) way for me to keep my diet on track is to track it. I use myfitnesspal.com because its free. I’ll sometimes fall off the wagon (um, like now), but I know I’ll get back on in a few days and don’t give myself too hard of a time about it.

#5 Observe. Gosh this one is hard, but its so important. Its been my focus for a while now (its a huge part of many types of yoga and Buddhism). What I mean by observe is to observe yourself. To reflect on your own actions, reactions and feelings. You observe them, but that doesn’t mean you have to change them. But I find that thinking, “I’m feeling anxious/stressed/angry about X/Y/Z” actually helps me somewhat overcome those feelings. I realize the feelings are there, accept them and stop dwelling on them.

Hopefully some of this was helpful, or at least interesting to read. Feel free to share any of your secrets!

Finding a Job

October 30, 2015 in LOOKBOOK

These past few weeks have been filled with all sorts of job-search related activities. Researching area hospitals, building a resume, finding references, chatting on phone interviews, attending in-person interviews… its a lot! But its actually kind of fun. And it makes me realize that residency won’t last forever, and the “real world” is just around the corner (finally)! I don’t think there’s any way to get around feeling at least a little bit stressed about finding a job, though. I just try not to become too attached to anything. I do the best I can and believe that I’ll end up somewhere that will make me happy. Why worry about something you can’t control, right?

Burberry London coat (pre-owned), AG stilt jeans (pre-owned, seeking the black version), J. Crew pumps (available in a ton of colors and prints), Fendi Bag
With the job hunt well underway I’m starting to make time for other things again. Like making myself presentable (thank goodness for everyone, lol). There were a few months there when I just didn’t want to do anything. Makeup? Ugh, maybe some concealer. Wash/ brush/ style hair? Too much work. Wear anything other than scrubs and workout clothes? Why?? The stuff just seemed to take too much effort and I couldn’t force myself to do it. I’m not the only one that gets in that rut, right?
plaidBut I love autumn. Everything about it, including fall fashion. So I’ve been doing more shopping… 🙂 Of course I bought more shoes (more shoes?!?). My favorite summer flats were J. Crew’s Sloan flats. I love them and I finally got them in black (to wear with my interview suit). While I was at it I grabbed the Gemma glitter flat and Suede d’Orsay loafer flat. These definitely live up to their 5/5 star reviews! Gorgeous and comfy right out of the box. I also have my eye on more Elsie pumps (the same style I’m wearing in these pictures), but I’m going to wait for a better sale. I have my eye on these beauties.
plaid4I suppose there’s (slightly…) more to fall fashion than shoes! My go-to everyday outfit is tailored skinnies, flats or heels, and an over-sized shirt. Madewell has been my best friend for the shirts! Their oversized flannel shirt is my favorite new addition. Holy soft and comfy (and it looks adorable with a striped shirt underneath like in this pic)! The striped version and a slimmer plaid version are sitting in my cart waiting for sale (already tried them on in store, I stick with my size xs). I’ve never been a huge Madewell shopper, but I’ve had surprisingly good luck recently. My favorite non-shirt purchase was this asymmetric skirt. Its crazy flattering and yet perfect for work. I wear it in a 0. Definitely recommend.
plaid 3As usual, the majority of my purchases are pre-owned. Like most of what I’m wearing in these pictures. I grabbed that unique Burberry coat for super cheap this past spring and have been waiting eagerly to wear it! I have a few other fun pre-owned purchases I’m hoping to share soon, too. I love shopping pre-owned. It can be a bit of a hassle, but there are great deals to be had and you won’t find anyone wearing the same thing, that’s for sure!!
