J. Crew updates their heel selection quite often. Last year, the Mona was their classic pump. If you remember, the Mona had all sorts of fit inconsistencies. I absolutely loved the patent version (as evident by their condition below…), but the suede and leather versions were just painful. After they discontinued the Mona’s, they came out with the Miri midheel pump in suede, leather and mirror patent, all of which made it to sale quite readily. The Sloane pump seems to be their “next big thing.”
Overall, I really like the Sloane pump. It comes in patent (black, nude and “faded barn”), mirror metallic, a nude and black cap toe and a well done leopard print. Its quite similar to the Mona pump with a few notable differences. First, it has a slightly shorter (1/4″) heel. This is perfect for me. I can get away with a 3.5″ heel at work, but anything above that gets painful by the end of the day. I suppose that 1/4″ probably alters the angle of my foot more than I realize. The other big difference is the shape of the toe. The Mona was definitely a round toe, and the Sloane has a chic almond toe. They still have the same width at the ball of the foot, so my foot doesn’t feel more squished in the Sloane, thank goodness.
Other small but notable differences are the materials and the sizing. The patent uppers are essentially the same on each pair, but J. Crew is now using a soft leather sole vs the slippery hard sole of the past. I don’t really mind either way, but I’m not sure how this changes their longevity. And as far as sizing goes, I’m a true to size 6. For the Mona, I definitely had to size up 1/2 size to a 6.5. They were snug, but comfortable. I also got a 6.5 in the Sloane, but they’re slightly too big. I’m going to add a foot petal to them and see how it goes. You could most likely get away with your true size for these unless your feet swell up a lot throughout the day. Overall, I’d definitely recommend these for a comfortable, classic pump!
